The United States of America and Israel have officially quit the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
According to Times of Israel, the particular move came following alleged accusations that the UNESCO criticised Israel’s Policies of East Jerusalem’s occupation and the grant of full-time membership to Palestine in defiance of American and Israeli pressure.
The United States had alerted UNESCO of its decision to leave the organisation in October 2017 and had called for its “fundamental reform”.
Israel followed the US in leaving the UNESCO.
The UNESCO has 193 member states and 11 associate members.
The UNESCO’s aim is “to contribute to the building of Peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information”.
